We visited Montevideo - a strong cold wind made this quite a frosty experience. Uruguay is a small country with only 3.3 Mio. inhabitants, and Montevideo was originally a fortress to protect the mouth of the Rio de la Plata.
Deshalb ist Montevideo viel später zur Stadt herangewachsen als andere Städte in Südamerika, hauptsächlich im 19. und 20. Jhdt. Das sieht man der Stadt auch an.
That's why Montevideo grew much later to become the city it is today, mainly in the 19th and 20th century, much later than other cities of South America. This created another type of town.
Es ist schade, dass zahlreiche Häuser in dem historischen Zentrum vergammeln. Überhaupt fehlt es an einer Stadtplanung mit Vorgaben für die Bebauung.
It is a little sad, that a lot of nice buildings in the historic center near the harbor decay. It lacks town planning and requirements regarding the style of houses being build in the city.
Das bemerkenswerteste Gebäude ist der Palacio Salvo am Unabhängigkeitsplatz. Es wurde 1928 erbaut und war für kurze Zeit das höchste Gebäude in Latein-Amerika.
The most remarkable building is the Palacio Salvo at the place of independence. It was built in 1928 and for a short time the highest building in Latin America.
